SUMMARY:BRESCO Incinerator Permit Hearing
DESCRIPTION:The Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) is considering renewing a Title V air pollution operating permit for the BRESCO incinerator\, and it’s up to us to tell MDE to DENY THE PERMIT at the public hearing on October 1. \nPublic Hearing on BRESCO Permit Renewal\n6:00–8:00PM on Thursday\, October 1\, 2026\nCurtis Bay Rec Center (1630 Filbert St.)\nRSVP \nAs a study published last year showed\, the BRESCO incinerator and Curtis Bay Energy incinerator are major sources of air pollution that contribute to serious health problems in our communities. Together\, they are associated with more than $100 million in annual health-related damages\, with the burden falling disproportionately on communities that have long faced environmental injustice. BRESCO\, Baltimore’s largest single source of air pollution\, also has a history of air pollution violations\, including failures involving pollution control equipment and emissions limits. \nOur community has already achieved an important victory by ending Maryland’s recognition of trash incineration as renewable energy. Now it is time for MDE\, the City of Baltimore\, and our public institutions to take the next step to hold these polluters accountable for public harms and DENY THE PERMIT.  \nCome to the hearing on Thursday\, October 1\, make your voice heard\, and urge MDE to protect public health and the future of South Baltimore communities.

SUMMARY:[POSTPONED — NEW DATE TBD] BRESCO Incinerator Permit Hearing
DESCRIPTION:Update as of June 2\, 2026: The Maryland Department of the Environment has POSTPONED this permit hearing. The new date has not yet been announced. It will not take place on Thursday\, June 11 as originally planned. We will update this calendar event with the rescheduled date as soon as we learn of it.  \n\nBaltimore continues to concentrate major waste and pollution infrastructure in South Baltimore. The Quarantine Road Landfill and BRESCO incinerator—both major contributors to an ongoing federal civil rights complaint filed by South Baltimore residents—are up for Title V air permit renewal. These hearings are key opportunities to demand stronger health and environmental protections. \nHearings\n\nCurtis Bay Recreation Center\, 1630 Filbert St\, Baltimore\, MD \n\nQuarantine Road Landfill — Thursday\, May 14\, 2026 at 6 PM\nBRESCO Incinerator — Thursday\, June 11\, 2026 at 6 PM\n\nWhy This Matters\n\nIncinerators in South Baltimore cause $100M/year in health damages statewide (from just 4 pollutants).\nThe landfill is a major methane source and has a long history of community concerns\, including disposal of 100\,000’s of potentially toxic incinerator ash per year.\nPolicy choices matter: As a result of our Title VI Civil Rights complaint\, Baltimore officials raised landfill fees for the first time since 1993 (from ~$60 to $135/ton)\, and waste volumes dropped sharply—showing change is possible – demonstrating that South Baltimore communities are not sacrifice zones or dumping grounds by accident.\nYet incinerator ash is still dumped at extremely low cost (~$25/ton vs. ~$85/ton in nearby Chester\, PA)\, raising serious concerns about safety and oversight of this material known to contain toxicants including Dioxins.\n\nMake Your Voice Count\nAttend\, speak and submit written comments by May 18\, 2026 for the Quarantine Road Landfill and June 15th\, 2026 for the BRESCO incinerator: sh************@******nd.gov \nRSVP\nLet us know if you plan to attend and if you’d like support preparing comments!
